  • Reading: listen to a story and answer questions RL.K.1, RL.K.3
  • Math: Matching, sorting and counting 1 to 3 K.CC.B.4a, K.CC.B.4b
  • Social studies: Classroom rules and places in our school C3 D2.Geo.1.K-2

Materials

  • Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes (or similar)
  • Blocks or cubes [Lego, spoons]
  • A die with tape on 4, 5 and 6
  • Paper for the picture map

Swaps in [brackets] use things most homes have.

The day, step by step

  1. 10 min Morning meeting

    1. Greeting: sing a hello song or choose a greeting (wave, high five, elbow bump).
    2. Calendar: "Today is ___. Yesterday was ___." Point to the date.
    3. Count the days of school: add one straw to the ones cup. Today is day 3.
    4. Weather: look outside together and mark the weather chart (sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy or snowy).
    5. Question of the day: "Where is your favorite place to learn?" Everyone answers in a full sentence.
  2. 15 min Phonics and letters RF.K.1d, RF.K.3a, RF.K.2

    1. Show capital B and lowercase b. Say: "This is B. B says /b/." Your child repeats the name and the sound.
    2. Mouth: Lips together, then pop them open with your voice on. Keep it short: /b/, not "buh".
    3. Keyword pictures: ball ⚽, bus 🚌, bear 🐻. Say each word and stretch or bounce the first sound.
    4. Sky-write capital B with a straight arm: Line down. Back to the top: bump, bump. Then lowercase b: Tall line down, back up halfway, around to make one bump.
    5. Listening game: Sound walk: close your eyes, listen for 30 seconds, then name every sound you heard (a car, a bird, the fridge). Then play "Same or different?" with two claps or two taps.

Little b and little d get mixed up. Bat first, then ball: the line comes first in b.

  3. 15–20 min Read-aloud RL.K.1, RL.K.3

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin (or any book about school places)

    1. Before: find the front cover and the back cover together.
    2. During: "Where is Pete now?" at each new place.
    3. After: "Where did Pete go first?" Sing the song line together.
  4. 20–30 min Math K.CC.B.4a, K.CC.B.4b

    1. Show 1, then 2, then 3 blocks in a row.
    2. Your child touches and counts each block out loud.
    3. Ask: "How many?" Praise the last number: "3! The last number tells how many."

Math center: Roll a die with only 1, 2 and 3 dots (cover the rest with tape) and build that many.

  5. 15–20 min Social studies C3 D2.Geo.1.K-2

    1. Walk to the places where you learn and play (the reading spot, the table, the outside area).
    2. Name what we do in each place.
    3. Draw a simple picture map with three places on it.
  6. 15 min Writing W.K.2, L.K.1a

Draw your favorite learning place. Write the first letter of its name together.

Drawings, scribbles, letter-like marks and invented spellings are all real writing at this age.

  7. 30 min Centers and play

    • Blocks: build our school
    • Play dough: roll the letter of the day
    • Book nook: look at books and find the front cover
    • Sorting tray: buttons, beads or toy cars

Device time (5 to 10 minutes, together): Rules at School.

  8. 5 min Closing circle SL.K.1a

Ask: "What do we do in each place?" Each child shares one thing.

Make it easier: Count just 1 and 2.
Make it harder: Count to 5 and show 5 fingers.
Look for: Does your child say the last number to answer "How many?"

Half day? Do the morning meeting, phonics, read-aloud and math. Fold science or social studies into the read-aloud talk.
