September · Week 1 · Day 2 · School day 2
Day 2: Our Rules
Play with your child: Think Like a Scientist
Today’s goals
- Phonics: Letters A, B RF.K.1d, RF.K.3a, RF.K.2
- Reading: listen to a story and answer questions RL.K.1, SL.K.1a
- Math: Matching, sorting and counting 1 to 3 K.CC.B.4a
- Science: What scientists do: look closely and ask questions NGSS practices 1 and 3
Materials
- What If Everybody Did That? (or another rules book)
- Socks, mittens or picture cards in pairs
- A leaf or rock; a magnifying glass if you have one
- Paper and crayons
Swaps in [brackets] use things most homes have.
The day, step by step
10 min Morning meeting
- Greeting: sing a hello song or choose a greeting (wave, high five, elbow bump).
- Calendar: "Today is ___. Yesterday was ___." Point to the date.
- Count the days of school: add one straw to the ones cup. Today is day 2.
- Weather: look outside together and mark the weather chart (sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy or snowy).
- Question of the day: "What is one way to be kind?" Everyone answers in a full sentence.
15 min Phonics and letters RF.K.1d, RF.K.3a, RF.K.2
- Quick review: show the A card. Name? Sound? (A, /a/.)
- Thumbs up if it starts with /a/: apple, moon, ant, sun, alligator.
- Letter hunt: find A and a in names, book titles and food boxes.
- Build or write A and a: play dough, a salt tray or a finger on the table.
15–20 min Read-aloud RL.K.1, SL.K.1a
What If Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick (or any book about rules)
- Before: "This book is about choices. Let’s think about each one."
- During: on each page ask: "Is that a safe choice? What could they do instead?"
- After: pick one rule from the book and act out the good choice.
20–30 min Math K.CC.B.4a
- Match pairs: socks, mittens or picture cards.
- Count the pairs, touching each one: "1, 2, 3."
- Ask: "How many pairs?" Your child answers with the last number counted.
Math center: Memory game with 3 pairs of cards, face down.
15–20 min Science NGSS practices 1 and 3
- Say: "Scientists look closely and ask questions."
- Look at a leaf or rock with a magnifying glass (or just your eyes).
- Take turns: "I notice ___." "I wonder ___."
15 min Writing W.K.2, L.K.1a
Draw one of our rules. Help your child label it with one word, like "kind".
Drawings, scribbles, letter-like marks and invented spellings are all real writing at this age.
30 min Centers and play
- Blocks: build our school
- Play dough: roll the letter of the day
- Book nook: look at books and find the front cover
- Sorting tray: buttons, beads or toy cars
Device time (5 to 10 minutes, together): Think Like a Scientist.
5 min Closing circle SL.K.1a
Ask: "Which rule helps us stay safe?" Each child shares one thing.
Make it easier: Count one pair at a time with your hand on top of theirs.
Make it harder: Make 4 or 5 pairs and play memory with them.
Look for: Does your child touch one object for each number word?
Half day? Do the morning meeting, phonics, read-aloud and math. Fold science or social studies into the read-aloud talk.
