Reading & writing

Names all capital and lowercase letters
Says the most common sound for each consonant and the short sound for each vowel
Reads about 20 to 30 sight words, like I, a, the, see, can, like, go, we, to, my
Hears and makes rhymes
Blends and breaks short words into sounds (c-a-t, cat)
Writes their first and last name
Writes simple sentences using known words and sound spelling
Retells a story: characters, setting, beginning, middle and end
Asks and answers questions about a book

Math

Counts to 100 by ones and by tens
Counts out up to 20 objects and tells how many
Writes numbers 0 to 20
Compares groups and numbers: more, fewer, the same
Adds and subtracts within 10 with objects or drawings
Adds and subtracts within 5 quickly
Breaks numbers to 10 into parts (5 is 3 and 2)
Names flat and solid shapes and finds them in the world
Compares length and weight: longer, shorter, heavier, lighter

Science

Tells what plants and animals need to live and grow
Observes and records the weather
Shows how pushes and pulls change how things move
Notices how the sun warms the Earth
Asks questions and makes observations like a scientist

Social studies

Knows rules at home and school and why we have them
Describes their family and community helpers
Compares life long ago and today
Knows some ways families celebrate holidays and traditions
Uses a simple map of a room or school

Social and emotional

Names feelings and uses words to solve problems
Takes turns and shares
Follows two- and three-step directions
Keeps trying when something is hard
Takes care of their things and cleans up
