The day, step by step

  1. 10–15 min Morning meeting SL.5.1

    1. Greet everyone and celebrate: name one kind thing a classmate did this week.
    2. Calendar: review the dates of our first week.
    3. Question of the day: What was the best part of our first week?
    4. Fluency warm-up: partners read the 12 spelling words syllable by syllable, then as whole words.
  2. 15–20 min Word study RF.5.3a, L.5.2e

    1. Word sort: students sort the spelling words into VC/CV, V/CV, VC/V and three-syllable groups.
    2. Spelling check: say each word, use it in a sentence, and students write it. Words: basket, napkin, problem, robot, pilot, music, cabin, lemon, fantastic, excellent, important, hundred.
    3. Students check their own work with a colored pencil and circle any syllable they missed.
    4. Each student sets a word study goal for next week.
  3. 35–45 min Reading workshop RL.5.2

Frindle by Andrew Clements (or similar)

    1. Retell what has happened so far in 5 sentences: the beginning, the conflict and what has happened since.
    2. Ask: What do you think the author wants us to learn? Brainstorm ideas such as words have power, or one person's idea can spread.
    3. Explain that a theme is a lesson about life written as a full sentence.
    4. Students write one possible theme and one detail that supports it.
    5. Collect notebooks to check reading logs.
  4. 50–60 min Math 5.NBT.1

    1. Warm-up: 4 quick x 10 and 1/10 questions on whiteboards.
    2. Place value check (6 questions): value of a digit, reading a 7-digit number, expanded form, 10 times, 1/10 and comparing two numbers.
    3. Sample items: the value of the 9 in 4,931,200 (900,000); 1/10 of 30,000 (3,000); write 5,060,013 in words (five million, sixty thousand, thirteen).
    4. Students who finish early play Millions Mountain.
    5. Reteach missed items in small groups.
  5. 20–25 min Science 5-PS1-1

    1. Review the balloon balance and cup tests.
    2. Teach: matter is made of particles too small to see. In air, the particles are far apart and moving fast.
    3. Students draw a model of a balloon filled with spread-out dots, add arrows to show motion and label the particles.
    4. Partners explain their models using the words matter, particles and space.
  6. 20–25 min Social studies C3 D2.Geo.1.3-5

    1. Give 4 coordinates: 30°N, 90°W; 40°N, 105°W; 42°N, 88°W; 48°N, 122°W.
    2. Students find the city closest to each one (New Orleans, Denver, Chicago, Seattle).
    3. Check together on the big map.
  7. 30–40 min Writing W.5.3, SL.5.1

    1. Students reread their small moment drafts.
    2. Partners read aloud and give one star (something that works) and one wish (something to add).
    3. Students make one revision based on the feedback.
    4. Store the draft in the writing folder for next week.
  8. 25–30 min Centers and independent practice

    1. Play Millions Mountain on a device.
    2. Coordinates challenge: find 3 more cities with a partner and write their latitude and longitude.
    3. Reading nook: 20 minutes.

Device time (15 min): play Millions Mountain (place value to the millions).

    Today’s game: Millions Mountain

  9. 5–10 min Closing circle SL.5.1

    1. What is one thing you learned this week that you did not know before?
    2. What is your goal for week 2?
    3. Thank a classmate who helped you.
Support: Read spelling sentences slowly and let students clap syllables before writing.
Stretch: Ask students to write a paragraph explaining how place value and latitude both use patterns.
Look for: Students spell most syllable-pattern words correctly and score at least 5 of 6 on the place value check.

Short day? Keep the spelling check and the place value check; move the particle drawing to next week.
