The day, step by step

  1. 10 min Morning meeting

    1. Greeting: sing a hello song or choose a greeting (wave, high five, elbow bump).
    2. Calendar: "Today is ___. Yesterday was ___." Point to the date.
    3. Count the days of school: add one straw to the ones cup. Today is day 5.
    4. Weather: look outside together and mark the weather chart (sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy or snowy).
    5. Question of the day: "What was the best part of this week?" Everyone answers in a full sentence.
  2. 15 min Phonics and letters RF.K.1d, RF.K.3a, RF.K.2

    1. Letter flash: show A, a, B and b in mixed order; your child says the name and the sound.
    2. Quick check: point to each letter when you say it (mix in two letters from earlier weeks).
    3. Listening game again: Sound walk: close your eyes, listen for 30 seconds, then name every sound you heard (a car, a bird, the fridge). Then play "Same or different?" with two claps or two taps.
  3. 15–20 min Read-aloud RF.K.1d, RL.K.10

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault (or any alphabet book)

    1. Before: "This book is full of letters. Let’s look for A and B."
    2. During: pause and let your child point to A and B.
    3. After: chant the rhythm together: "Chicka chicka boom boom!"
  4. 20–30 min Math K.CC.B.4, K.MD.B.3

    1. Game: "Show me 1, 2, 3." Hold up fingers, then clap that many times.
    2. Quick sort of 6 toys by any rule your child chooses.
    3. Count each group and say which has more (just by looking).

Math center: Free choice of this week’s math centers.

  5. 15–20 min Social studies C3 D2.Civ.3.K-2, D2.Civ.7.K-2

    1. Make a class promise poster: "We will be safe, kind and curious."
    2. Your child adds a handprint or signs with the first letter of their name.
    3. Hang it next to the rules poster.
  6. 15 min Writing W.K.2, L.K.1a

Write your name (as much as you can) on the promise poster. Celebrate every try.

Drawings, scribbles, letter-like marks and invented spellings are all real writing at this age.

  7. 30 min Centers and play

    • Blocks: build our school
    • Play dough: roll the letter of the day
    • Book nook: look at books and find the front cover
    • Sorting tray: buttons, beads or toy cars

Device time (5 to 10 minutes, together): Letters A and B.

  8. 5 min Closing circle SL.K.1a

Ask: "Share one thing you learned this week." Each child shares one thing.

Make it easier: Trace a dotted version of the name.
Make it harder: Write the whole name with a capital first letter.
Look for: Start the name-writing portfolio: save today’s name sample with the date.

Half day? Do the morning meeting, phonics, read-aloud and math. Fold science or social studies into the read-aloud talk.
