The day, step by step

  1. 10–15 min Morning meeting SL.4.1

    1. Date in standard and word form.
    2. Question of the day: What was your favorite part of our first week?
    3. Shout-out circle: each child names one thing a classmate did well this week.
  2. 15–20 min Word study RF.4.3a

    1. Spelling check: read each of the 12 list words in a sentence, such as 'The tiger hid behind the basket,' and kids write the word.
    2. Syllable check: kids split 6 new words: cactus, open, tablet, pupil, velvet, hotel. Answers: cac-tus, o-pen, tab-let, pu-pil, vel-vet, ho-tel.
    3. Correct together and celebrate.
  3. 25–30 min Reading workshop RI.4.2, RL.4.10

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo (or similar)

    1. Stamina goal: read independently for 20 minutes. Set a timer and track it on a class chart.
    2. Main idea check: read aloud: Our school garden grows tomatoes, beans and sunflowers. Students water it each morning. In fall, the class picks the vegetables for a salad. Kids write the main idea (Students grow and care for food in the school garden) and two details.
    3. Read chapter 5 of the novel aloud and talk about how Opal is making new friends.
  4. 35–45 min Math 4.NBT.2

    1. Warm-up: count by 100,000s from 100,000 to 1,000,000.
    2. Quick check: 1) Value of the 6 in 462,013 (60,000). 2) Write 305,090 in words (three hundred five thousand, ninety). 3) 70,000 + 2,000 + 40 + 1 in standard form (72,041). 4) 819,400 in expanded form (800,000 + 10,000 + 9,000 + 400). 5) 1 more than 999,999 (1,000,000). 6) The digit in the ten thousands place of 538,271 (3).
    3. Score together. Kids circle what they got right and star one to practice.
    4. Practice time: build and read numbers with digit cards.
  5. 25–30 min Science 4-PS3-2

    1. Lay out picture cards: a drum, a lamp, a campfire, a bicycle, a phone charger and a stove.
    2. Kids sort them by main energy form. Some fit two groups, so ask kids to explain their choices.
    3. Exit ticket: name one thing at home that uses electric energy and what it changes into. Example: a hair dryer changes electric energy into heat and motion.
  6. 25–30 min Writing W.4.3, L.4.2

    1. Kids reread and fix their small moment: capital letters, end marks and spelling of list words.
    2. Copy the best version neatly or type it.
    3. Author share: 4 or 5 volunteers read aloud, and listeners give one specific compliment.
  7. 20–30 min Centers and independent practice

    1. Reread a favorite chapter.
    2. Energy collage: cut magazine pictures into energy groups.
    3. Map corner: finish your classroom map.
    4. Writer's notebook: add three new topics to your list.

Device time (15 min): play Syllable Splitter.

    Today’s game: Syllable Splitter

  8. 5–10 min Closing circle SL.4.1

    1. What do you know now that you didn't know on Monday?
    2. Set one goal for next week.
    3. Give the class a round of applause for a great first week.
Support: Read the quick check questions aloud and let your child answer some out loud.
Stretch: Explain in writing how a car uses more than one form of energy.
Look for: Your child gets 5 of 6 on the place value check, reads for 20 minutes and states a main idea as a full sentence.

Short day? Keep the spelling check, the place value check and the author share.
