The day, step by step

  1. 10–15 min Morning meeting SL.4.1

    1. Date and calendar.
    2. Question of the day: What is the biggest number you can say out loud?
    3. Warm-up: How many times bigger is 1,000,000 than 100,000? (10 times)
  2. 15–20 min Word study RF.4.3a

    1. Write fantastic. Find the vowel sounds: a, a, i. Three vowel sounds means three syllables.
    2. Split with the rules: fan-tas-tic. All three are closed syllables.
    3. Practice: understand (un-der-stand), September (Sep-tem-ber), important (im-por-tant), magnetic (mag-net-ic).
    4. Kids clap, split and read each word, then use two of them in sentences.
  3. 25–30 min Reading workshop RI.4.2

Energy Makes Things Happen by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley (or similar)

    1. Review: the main idea is the big point and the details prove it.
    2. Read 4 pages aloud.
    3. Model a main idea box with two detail boxes. Main idea: Energy makes things move and change. Detail: Food gives our bodies energy. Detail: Sunlight gives plants energy to grow.
    4. Kids read another short section and fill in a main idea and two details of their own.
    5. Independent reading for 15 minutes.
  4. 35–45 min Math 4.NBT.2

    1. Warm-up: Write 70,000 + 4,000 + 30 + 9 in standard form. (74,039)
    2. Word form to standard form: six hundred thousand, twelve = 600,012; forty-four thousand, four hundred four = 44,404.
    3. Show all three forms for 238,507. Word form: two hundred thirty-eight thousand, five hundred seven. Expanded form: 200,000 + 30,000 + 8,000 + 500 + 7.
    4. Partner game: one writes a number in expanded form, and the other writes it in standard and word form. Play 4 rounds.

    Math center: three-forms card sort.

  5. 25–30 min Science 4-PS3-2

    1. Review the energy chart from Day 2.
    2. Set up four stations: turn on a flashlight, snap a rubber band near your ear, dip a finger in warm and then cold water, and push a toy car.
    3. At each station kids write the form of energy they noticed: light, sound, heat or motion.
    4. Discuss: energy often changes form. A flashlight's battery stores energy that becomes light and a little heat.
  6. 25–30 min Writing W.4.3

    1. Teach strong first sentences: begin with action, a sound or a feeling. 'SPLASH! I hit the water.'
    2. Kids write three different first sentences for their small moment and pick the best one.
    3. Rewrite the beginning of the draft with the new first sentence.
    4. Share the before and after with a partner.
  7. 20–30 min Centers and independent practice

    1. Long word builder: split and read 8 three-syllable words.
    2. Three-forms card sort.
    3. Energy picture sort: motion, sound, light, heat, electric.
    4. Reading with a main idea box.

Device time (15 min): play Place Value Peaks.

    Today’s game: Place Value Peaks

  8. 5–10 min Closing circle SL.4.1

    1. Which energy station surprised you?
    2. Read your best first sentence aloud.
    3. Tomorrow is check day. What will you practice tonight?
Support: Let your child use the place value chart for every word form problem and read numbers in two chunks.
Stretch: Write 3,408,215 in all three forms.
Look for: Your child writes a number correctly in standard, expanded and word form and names the energy form at each station.

Short day? Keep the energy stations, the three-forms practice and the first sentence revision.
