Day 4: Kind Words and Actions

Week 1 planDay 5 →

Play with your child: Super Senses

Today’s goals

  • Phonics: Short a RF.1.2b, RF.1.3g
  • Reading: Routines; who, where and what happens in a story RL.1.1, RL.1.7
  • Math: Add by counting on from the bigger number 1.OA.6
  • Science: Five senses: observe and describe like a scientist K-2 science practices (observe, record)

Materials

  • Do Unto Otters (or another kindness book)
  • A ten frame [draw a 2 x 5 grid] and 10 counters
  • A clipboard or a book to write on
  • Paper for notes

Swaps in [brackets] use things most homes have.

The day, step by step

  1. 10–15 min Morning meeting and calendar 1.NBT.1, 1.NBT.2

    1. Greeting: choose a greeting (wave, high five, elbow bump) and greet each person by name.
    2. Calendar: "Today is ___. Yesterday was ___. Tomorrow will be ___." Read the date together.
    3. Days of school: add one straw. Today is day 4.
    4. Weather: mark the weather chart and the outside temperature (warm, cool or cold).
    5. Question of the day: "What does kindness look like?" Everyone answers in a full sentence.
  2. 15–20 min Phonics and decodable reading RF.1.2b, RF.1.3g

    1. Decodable sentences: "Sam has a map." "The cat is in a bag." "Dad can nap on the mat."
    2. Find and underline the words with the pattern. Read each sentence twice: first carefully, then smoothly.
    3. Decodable reading: a short decodable book or passage with the pattern (from your school or public library).
    4. Heart words: the, a, is, I. Say the word, spell it aloud, write it, and put a heart over the tricky part.
  3. 20–25 min Reading workshop and read-aloud RL.1.1, RL.1.7

Do Unto Otters by Laurie Keller (or any book about manners and kindness)

    1. Before: "This is a funny book with a big idea. Let’s find it."
    2. During: look at the pictures. "What is the otter doing that is kind?"
    3. After: "What is the big idea of this book?" (treat others the way you want to be treated).

Then read: 10 minutes of independent or partner reading from "just right" books.

  4. 25–35 min Math and math centers 1.OA.6

    1. Fill a ten frame with 6 counters. Ask: "How many more to make 10?"
    2. Count on from 6 to 10 to check: "7, 8, 9, 10. That is 4 more."
    3. Do it for 8, 5 and 9. Write the facts: 6 + 4 = 10, 8 + 2 = 10.

Math center: Make-10 cards: draw a card, show it in a ten frame, and find its partner to make 10.

  5. 15–20 min Science K-2 science practices (observe, record)

    1. Go on a senses walk (inside or outside). Bring a clipboard.
    2. Record one thing for each sense: I see, I hear, I smell, I feel. (No tasting on walks!)
    3. Back inside, share one surprising observation.
  6. 15–20 min Writing W.1.3, W.1.2, L.1.2

Write a kind note to someone in your family or class: "Dear ___, thank you for ___." Sign your name.

Sound spelling is real writing in 1st grade. Expect correct spelling for heart words and patterns already taught.

  7. 20–30 min Centers and independent practice

    • Word building: magnetic letters or letter tiles for short a words
    • Book bins: choose two "just right" books for your book box
    • Math: ten-frame flash and count-on dominoes
    • Listening: a read-aloud recording from the public library

Device time (5 to 10 minutes, together): Super Senses.

  8. 5 min Closing circle SL.1.1

Ask: "What kind words did you hear today?" Each child shares one thing.

Support: Use real objects and check by counting all.
Stretch: Ask "How many more to make 10?" with no ten frame.
Look for: Does your child know the partners of 10 (9 and 1, 8 and 2, 7 and 3, 6 and 4, 5 and 5)?

Short day? Do the morning meeting, phonics, reading and math. Fold science or social studies into the read-aloud talk.
