Week 1 planDay 4 →

Play with your child: Count On to Add

Today’s goals

  • Phonics: Short a RF.1.2b, RF.1.3g
  • Reading: Routines; who, where and what happens in a story RL.1.2, RL.1.3
  • Math: Add by counting on from the bigger number 1.OA.5, 1.OA.1
  • Social studies: Classroom rules and jobs C3 D2.Civ.8.K-2

Materials

  • The Day You Begin (or another belonging book)
  • Counters and a story mat [a drawing on paper]
  • Index cards for a jobs chart
  • Crayons and lined paper

Swaps in [brackets] use things most homes have.

The day, step by step

  1. 10–15 min Morning meeting and calendar 1.NBT.1, 1.NBT.2

    1. Greeting: choose a greeting (wave, high five, elbow bump) and greet each person by name.
    2. Calendar: "Today is ___. Yesterday was ___. Tomorrow will be ___." Read the date together.
    3. Days of school: add one straw. Today is day 3.
    4. Weather: mark the weather chart and the outside temperature (warm, cool or cold).
    5. Question of the day: "What is something you are good at?" Everyone answers in a full sentence.
  2. 15–20 min Phonics and decodable reading RF.1.2b, RF.1.3g

    1. Sound boxes: draw a box for each sound. Say a word, push a counter into a box for each sound, then write the letters.
    2. Dictation words: map, bag, van.
    3. Dictation sentence: "The cat is sad." Check: a capital letter at the start, spaces between words, an end mark.
    4. Heart words: the, a, is, I. Say the word, spell it aloud, write it, and put a heart over the tricky part.
  3. 20–25 min Reading workshop and read-aloud RL.1.2, RL.1.3

The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson (or any book about belonging)

    1. Before: "The girl in this story feels different from the other kids. Let’s find out what she does."
    2. During: "What is Angelina thinking right now? How do you know?"
    3. After: "How did sharing her story help her? What story could you share?"

Then read: 10 minutes of independent or partner reading from "just right" books.

  4. 25–35 min Math and math centers 1.OA.5, 1.OA.1

    1. Tell a story: "There are 6 kids on the rug. 3 more come. How many now?"
    2. Model counting on with fingers: "6 in my head, then 7, 8, 9."
    3. Your child solves two more stories (5 and 4, 7 and 2) and draws a quick picture for one.

Math center: Story mats: a rug or a playground drawing and counters to act out addition stories.

  5. 15–20 min Social studies C3 D2.Civ.8.K-2

    1. Make a class jobs chart: line leader, plant helper, book helper, door holder.
    2. Ask: "Why do we share jobs?" (everyone helps, the room runs smoothly).
    3. Choose a home job for this week and practice it.
  6. 15–20 min Writing W.1.3, W.1.2, L.1.2

Draw two things you are good at. Write: "I am good at ___ and ___." Remember the capital I.

Sound spelling is real writing in 1st grade. Expect correct spelling for heart words and patterns already taught.

  7. 20–30 min Centers and independent practice

    • Word building: magnetic letters or letter tiles for short a words
    • Book bins: choose two "just right" books for your book box
    • Math: ten-frame flash and count-on dominoes
    • Listening: a read-aloud recording from the public library

Device time (5 to 10 minutes, together): Count On to Add.

  8. 5 min Closing circle SL.1.1

Ask: "How did someone help you today?" Each child shares one thing.

Support: Act the stories out with toys instead of fingers.
Stretch: Tell a story with three numbers, like 4 + 2 + 1.
Look for: Does your child know when to add (more came, joined, in all)?

Short day? Do the morning meeting, phonics, reading and math. Fold science or social studies into the read-aloud talk.
