Materials
- Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (Wonderscape Library)
- Spelling test paper
- Ratio check (6 problems)
- Gumdrops and toothpicks [or clay]

Swaps in [brackets] are fine. Use what you have at home or in the classroom.
The day, step by step

- Share goals and post them on a goal wall.
- Celebrate one thing each person did well this week.
15–20 min Word study L.6.4b
- Spelling test: the 10 words from Monday.
- Root check: write the meaning of geo, graph and logy and one word for each.
- Bonus: define a new word, like geophysics or autobiography, using roots.
- Self-check with a partner.
25–30 min Reading workshop RL.6.2
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (Wonderscape Library)
- Read aloud the next section of the story.
- Discuss: What is this story really about so far?

- Share 3 responses and talk about which show a theme.
35–45 min Math 6.RP.1
- Ratio check: 6 problems, including writing ratios three ways, part-to-part, part-to-whole and simplifying.
- Example: A garden has 8 tomato plants and 12 pepper plants. Write tomato to pepper in simplest form (2:3).
- Students explain one answer in words.
- Review answers together and set a math goal for next week.
Math center: students who finish early make a ratio poster about their family.
25–30 min Science MS-PS1-1
- Review atoms, elements and molecules.
- Students build and label H2O, O2 and CO2 from memory.
- Explain in writing: How is a molecule different from an atom?
- Share: Which molecule was hardest to remember?
25–30 min Writing W.6.10
- Final edit of the Reader and Writer Profile with a checklist: capital letters, end marks, a topic sentence, 3 or more details.

- What is one ratio about your week?
- What goal will you work on next week?
Support: Read spelling words in two parts (geo-graph-y) before the test.
Stretch: Write 3 riddles using roots, such as I study life and its root is bio.
Look for: Students score 8 of 10 on spelling, write ratios correctly and build accurate molecules.
Short day? Keep the spelling test, the ratio check and the profile sharing.
