September · Week 1 · Day 5 · School day 5
Day 5: Prove It: Week One Review
Play with your child: Expression Explorer
Today’s goals
- Word study: Spelling and meaning check for scrib/script and graph L.9-10.4b
- Reading: Write and share an evidence paragraph RL.9-10.1
- Math: Expressions review and quiz HSA-SSE.A.1
- Science: Graph and analyze heart rate data; write a conclusion HS-LS1-3
Materials
- Heart rate data from Day 3
- Grid paper for a line graph
- Expressions quiz (10 items) and answer key
- World map for the map skills check
- Students' CEE paragraphs
The quiz can be oral for a student who freezes on paper tests.
The day, step by step
10–15 min Morning meeting and current events SL.9-10.1
- Headline share; review the week's headlines and ask which story will still matter in a month.
- Question of the day: What did you prove this week, and how?
- Warm-up: spell two of the week's words on whiteboards.
15–20 min Vocabulary and word study L.9-10.4b
- Spelling check: 10 words dictated in sentences (for example: The scribe left an inscription on the manuscript.).
- Meaning check: write the root and meaning of transcribe, autograph and prescribe without notes.
- Self-correct and record the score; words missed go on next week's review list.
30–40 min Literature and texts RL.9-10.1
The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell (public domain)
- Students polish their CEE paragraph for 10 minutes using yesterday's self-check.
- Share in groups of three: each reader hears one strength and one question.
- Whole class: what did this week's two stories teach about reading as a detective? Collect three rules (notice details, question the narrator, prove it with the text).
- Book talk: introduce next week's stories, The Necklace and The Tell-Tale Heart, with one sentence each and no spoilers.
40–50 min Algebra 1 HSA-SSE.A.1
- Review game: 6 quick items on whiteboards (label 3m - 8; evaluate 2x² when x = 3 (18); translate 'seven more than half a number' (n/2 + 7); interpret the 0.25 in 40d + 0.25k).
- Quiz: 10 items covering parts of expressions, order of operations, evaluation, translation and interpretation.
- Self-score with the key. Each student writes the error type for any miss in the error log (sign, order of operations, reversed subtraction).
- Preview next week: properties and like terms.
20–25 min Biology HS-LS1-3
- Graph the heart rate data: time on the x-axis (rest, 0, 1, 2 minutes after), beats per minute on the y-axis, one line per person.
- Describe the shape: a sharp rise, then a fall back toward resting. Compute how close each person got to resting after 2 minutes.
- Write a three-sentence conclusion: what happened, whether the hypothesis was supported, and how the body returning to resting rate is homeostasis.
- Lab notebook check: question, hypothesis, variables, data table, graph, conclusion.
20–25 min World history C3 D2.Geo.1.9-12
- Map skills check on a world map: label the equator and prime meridian, give coordinates for two cities, name the four river valleys, and define two of the five themes.
- Discuss one mistake the whole class made and fix it together.
25–35 min Writing W.9-10.5
- Final revision pass: replace two weak verbs, vary one sentence opening, check every quotation mark and citation.
- Students copy or type the final paragraph for the portfolio.
- Reflection line at the bottom: the hardest part of writing this paragraph was...
25–35 min Independent practice and projects
- Independent reading: choose a novel for the reading log and read 20 minutes.
- Algebra: redo any quiz item missed, showing the correct steps.
- Science: finish the graph and conclusion.
- Choice: start a map of your own neighborhood using the five themes.
Device time (15 min): play expressions-1, the game named in this day's play field
Today’s game: Expression Explorer
5–10 min Closing reflection SL.9-10.1
- One thing you proved this week with evidence, in any subject.
- One habit you want to keep next week.
- Weekend reading: 60 minutes in your independent novel.
Support: Allow notes on the quiz for the translation chart and reduce the map check to the equator, prime meridian and two cities.
Stretch: Ask students to compute the average heart rate change for the group and explain what an average hides.
Look for: Students write a clear CEE paragraph, score 8 of 10 or better on the quiz, and explain homeostasis using their own data.
Short day? Keep the quiz, the paragraph share and the science conclusion.
